Drinking very hot beverages increases the risk of esophageal cancer

Drinking hot drinks, such as tea or coffee, is a common practice worldwide. However, scientific studies suggest that regularly drinking hot drinks may increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified drinking hot drinks above 65°C as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Mechanism of tumor formation

Regular consumption of very hot beverages can damage the lining of the esophagus. Repeated thermal injuries cause chronic inflammation that can promote the development of cancerous changes, especially squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus.

Scientific evidence

Epidemiological studies provide evidence of an association between drinking very hot beverages and the risk of esophageal cancer. In Iran, the Golestan Cohort Study, involving over 50,000 people, found that drinking tea at temperatures above 60°C increased the risk of esophageal cancer by 90% compared with drinking tea at lower temperatures. Similar results were obtained in China, where regular drinkers of very hot tea had a 90% higher risk of developing esophageal cancer.

Synergy with other risk factors

Consuming very hot beverages in combination with other risk factors, such as alcohol and tobacco, can significantly increase the likelihood of developing esophageal cancer. Alcohol increases the permeability of the esophageal mucosa, facilitating the entry of harmful substances, while tobacco delivers carcinogenic chemicals. The combined action of these factors increases inflammatory processes and promotes cell mutations.

Recommendations for beverage consumption

To minimize the risk, it is recommended to avoid drinking beverages above 65°C. Allowing beverages to cool before drinking can help protect the lining of the esophagus from thermal damage. It is also worth limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking to further reduce the risk of developing esophageal cancer.
