Lack of appetite is a common problem for cancer patients. It can be caused by treatment side effects, stress, and metabolic changes, and can result in even greater weakening of the body. What are effective ways to maintain an adequate level of nutrition and stimulate appetite?
✔︎ Small but frequent meals
Instead of large portions, it is worth eating 5-6 small but nutritious meals a day. This helps avoid the feeling of satiety and provides the body with the necessary nutrients.
✔︎ High-calorie products
“Boost” the caloric value of meals by adding healthy fats – avocado, olive oil, flaxseed oil, hemp oil, evening primrose oil or sesame paste (tahini). A good idea for a second breakfast, for example, would be a pudding with chia seeds, which are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids with anti-inflammatory properties.
✔︎ Proper hydration
Drinking enough water and light herbal infusions helps prevent dehydration, which can worsen a lack of appetite. It is also worth choosing vegetable and fruit cocktails, which simultaneously hydrate and provide vitamins.
✔︎ Herbs and spices that stimulate appetite
Adding ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, basil or mint to your meals can aid digestion and improve appetite. Lightly seasoning your dishes makes them more aromatic.
✔︎ Easily digestible but nutritious meals
Avoiding heavy and fatty foods helps avoid feeling full. It is worth choosing light cream soups, vegetable purees, cooked/stewed vegetables/fruits, white rice. Remember to provide an adequate supply of protein.
✔︎ Physical activity and fresh air
Even a short walk can stimulate your appetite, improve your mood and support your metabolism.
✔︎ Psychological support
Stress and anxiety can increase the lack of appetite. The help of a psycho-oncologist or support of loved ones can help improve the quality of life and the desire to eat.
✔︎ Nutrition and supplementation
In some cases, protein supplements can be helpful. However, it is worth consulting a doctor or dietitian before using them.
Proper nutrition is extremely important during cancer treatment. Even small changes to your diet can help maintain strength and improve your well-being. It is worth consulting your dietary choices with a specialist to best support your body in the healing process.
