Updated on 15/05/2022

Unfortunately, in mid-March 2022, I began to experience disturbing side effects of the therapy, it started with accidentally tripping over my own legs, after a few days I started limping on my right leg, then I had no control in my right ankle when I walked (no dorsiflexion), I started I moved on crutches, a few days later on a walker, and on March 30, 2022 I stopped walking completely, my legs stopped moving at all. In this condition, I was taken to hospital where I was diagnosed with longitudinal myelitis caused by immunotherapy (my treatment for cancer). Because myelitis at such an advanced stage is a serious complication, one of the oncological drugs had to be discontinued. I was given immunoglobulins and steroids, thanks to which I slowly began to regain function in my legs.

On April 15, 2022, I was discharged from the hospital, since then I have been undergoing intensive rehabilitation every day to regain fitness as soon as possible. These are ongoing fixed costs and rehabilitation is a long-term process.

13/06/2022 after two months of physiotherapy, I am slowly starting to get back on my feet, I walk with crutches, but the hospital stay and biplegia resulted in significant muscle atrophy, which is why I get tired quickly during prolonged activity and I still use a wheelchair. I lack control in my ankle joints, superficial sensation in my left leg and deep sensation in my right leg. Currently, I cannot work, drive a car, and cannot climb stairs. He continues intensive rehabilitation and there is a chance of full recovery, but it is a long-term process and it is impossible to estimate how long it will take.

On 18.05.2021, I received my first dose of treatment - immunotherapy! Fortunately, thanks to the drug manufacturer, the therapy is fully reimbursed, because I am taking part in a study of the drug's effectiveness. I still have radiotherapy ahead of me and a further fight to return to my previous fitness. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

In the examination on May 6, 2021, I was diagnosed with a thrombus in the inferior vena cava and further metastases. Unfortunately, the metastases are located in the spinal canal and press on my spinal cord, causing pain, and if they grow, they may even lead to hemiplegia. For this reason, radiotherapy is planned.

Dream:

Hi! My name is Weronika and I am 24 years old.

In December 2020, just before Christmas, I was accidentally diagnosed kidney cancer. The tumor was large, 10 cm in diameter, so the entire right kidney had to be removed. The surgery took place 5 days after the diagnosis, and I spent a month recovering while participating in online classes and passing exams. I returned to full-time studies because I am in the last year of my medical and dental studies. Due to my health condition, I had to move out of the dormitory because I needed a guardian, and only students of a given university can stay in dormitories.

Unfortunately, in the follow-up examination after the first surgery CT scan detected a lesion in the adrenal gland and again I had to look for a date and a hospital where another surgery would be performed, which was not so easy during the pandemic. The adrenal gland was removed at the beginning of February 2021, which involved another long period of convalescence and absence from classes. I thought this would be the end of my fight against cancer.

After a month and subsequent check-ups; PET, CT, – appeared lung metastaseswhich are not surgical, therefore systemic treatment is necessary. I was forced to pay for expensive genetic tests in Germany from my own funds, which cost about PLN 6,000. euro. I was diagnosed with it during these tests a rare genetic mutation of the TFE3 gene. With this type of mutation, it is necessary to start treatment that is not reimbursed by the National Health Fund, which is associated with high costs, the therapy was estimated at approximately 60 thousand PLN per month.

My dream is, despite illness and treatment, to finish my studies on time and start an internship, enjoy life and take care of my dogs.
