Updates:
Updated on September 29, 2021
Mr. Zbigniew underwent surgery to remove his larynx and has a voice prosthesis fitted. The prosthesis itself was successfully obtained on the National Health Fund, but its replacement parts are not reimbursed - e.g. patches and replacement overlays. Mr. Zbigniew should also have special rehabilitation, which is unfortunately available only for a fee and due to limited financial resources, is currently not available to him.
Dream:
Since 2015, I have been under the care of an otolaryngologist due to growths in my larynx. Over time, hoarseness became more frequent when speaking, so the doctor recommended further diagnostics. On August 25, 2018, a sample was taken for histopathological examination - results malignant tumor of the larynx.
The conference decided on treatment - 6 weeks of radiotherapy in Koszalin. According to the doctor, the cancer had been cured at that point.
In 2020, the hoarseness worsened, I had a constant sore throat. It was not until February 2021 that I was referred for another biopsy for histopathological examination. The results confirmed the doctors' suspicions - recurrence laryngeal cancer.
Currently, doctors give me 7 months to live. Neither radiotherapy nor chemotherapy are possible in my case. The only way out is complete removal of the larynx.
Doctors in Szczecin give me a maximum of 1.5 months to make a decision. I'm against the wall. I am afraid not only of long treatment after surgery, but also of costs. I don't know yet whether a refund will be possible voice prosthesis from the National Health Fund. If I have to buy it privately, the cost will be around PLN 2,000. Doctors say that it should be replaced every 3 months. In addition, there will be travel costs, check-ups. Currently, I live on my pension (PLN 770). I cannot even afford to buy a single prosthesis, let alone replace it regularly.
I am asking for help because I would like to live longer than these few months. My only chance is surgery, and I won't be able to cover all the costs myself.
