My name is Marek Niemiec, I am 56 years old. I am a paramedic by profession. For almost half of my life, working in the Emergency Department and the Hospital Emergency Department, I have fought for the health and lives of other people. Since childhood, I was taught to help others. Today, I am fighting a duel with a difficult opponent – glioblastoma.

I found out about the disease in February 2021. One evening I went to bed unaware that I would wake up in a completely different reality. During the night, I had an epileptic seizure with apnea. I was immediately admitted to the hospital in the Neurology Department. After tests, it turned out that I had a tumor in the right frontal lobe that needed to be removed. In March 2021, I underwent a tumor removal procedure. After a histopathological test I got a diagnosis that turned my life upside down – glioma of the brain. For the next 3 years all follow-up tests were good, with no recurrence.

Unfortunately, in March 2024 it turned out that there was a relapse. The tumor has progressed to a more advanced, malignant form. A month later, I underwent another tumor removal surgery, which, despite minor complications, was successful. The next stage of treatment was to begin radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which I receive monthly. After the second procedure, a sample of my tumor was sent for genetic testing, which showed that the development of glioma is associated with the genetic mutation I have.

The only chance to prolong my life is foreign therapy with a non-reimbursable drug. The total cost of treatment is approximately 500,000 złoty. I've always had an optimistic outlook on life. I hope that thanks to people's support and the kindness of their hearts, I'll be able to fulfill my greatest dream – to undergo treatment abroad. I would like to spend many more years with my beloved family: my wife, sons, and daughter-in-law. I'll soon become a grandfather, which further motivates me.
