DREAM:
The life and functioning of patients after neurological injuries is still an unknown area for us. The communication barrier between patients and their loved ones is almost impassable, which is why we do not have much knowledge about the scale of their consciousness or reactions to stimuli.
To improve the quality of this communication University Clinical Center Prof. K. Gibiński Medical University of Silesia in Katowice started a collection for cyber eye – a device using the latest technology for non-verbal communication, intended for neurological patients after cranio-cerebral injuries, after strokes, for patients with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), after brain tumors (oncology patients), as well as brain damage after cardiac arrest (sudden cardiac arrest) and in hypoxic patients. The device is programmed to track eye movements that indicate messages on the computer, which allows communication with the patient.
The cyber eye has an unquestionable impact on brain plasticity and the rehabilitation of cognitive functions. The entire device consists of four diodes located in the corners of the monitor, which reflect light in the cornea of the eye and allow us to determine where the patient is looking. The breakthrough of the cyber eye is that it allows you to objectively assess the condition of patients who are unable to communicate on their own. Thanks to this technology, approximately 40 percent patients with suspected vegetative state can obtain confirmation of their preserved consciousness.
The cyber eye is therefore more than just a rehabilitation tool - it is a chance for complete improvement in contact with seemingly disabled patients. Let's support the purchase of this technology and let them speak.
