In May I celebrated my 18th birthday.

I would like to share my story with you - it does not start well, but I believe with all my heart that it will have a happy ending.

From an early age, I was a very energetic, agile and curious girl. I was a promising athlete, I practiced athletics and won competitions. I studied great. My great love was and still is horses, I can spend hours with them and then time stops!

In 2013, I fell in the swimming pool and soon my left leg started hurting. Endless visits to doctors began. It took a long time to find the cause of my symptoms. Doctors initially suggested growing pains, or pain typical of adolescence. There were even claims that I was faking illness so as not to go to school. Finally, in 2014, we heard a diagnosis that no one expected - inoperable Ewing's sarcoma located on the sacrum, with metastases to the lungs. The pressure of the tumor led to nerve damage and thus left leg paresis. To this day I still ask myself: "Why did this happen to me?" After all, I was a great athlete, I won competitions, and my mother made sure I ate healthily.

After the diagnosis was made, treatment was immediately initiated at the Institute of Mother and Child in Warsaw. I received very strong chemotherapy cycles, in the meantime I underwent radiotherapy, right lung surgery, and in October 2015 I received mega chemotherapy ending with a stem cell autotransplant. I didn't give up. I took care of myself all the time and exercised intensively with a rehabilitator. In June 2016, the disease recurred. I started new chemotherapy cycles. In December, I underwent my second surgery on my right lung, still receiving chemotherapy. Additionally, the treatment included an expensive, non-reimbursable drug, the costs of which had to be covered by my parents. In June 2017, I underwent the second mega chemotherapy, which ended with an autotransplant of stem cells. Finally, the long-awaited moment came - I was healthy. I started living a normal life, remembering about a healthy lifestyle and rehabilitation. Plans for the future have emerged. I passed the junior high school exam and was accepted into my dream high school with a biology and chemical profile, with the intention of taking up medical studies in the future and being able to help others.

Unfortunately, after a year of peace, everything suddenly collapsed like a house of cards. Recurrence on the lung – and everything changed. I started new chemotherapy, and in the next cycle the doctors decided to use the targeted drug Votrient, which is not reimbursed by the National Health Fund. Administered together with chemotherapy and a course of radiation, it led to disease remission. An inoperable tumor continues to shrink and is inactive. At the end of August 2019, I received the last chemotherapy, and in September my stem cells were collected and preserved for another autotransplant. For now, however, it has been abandoned in favor of continuing the administration of the excellently working Votrient. This medicine is my hope for lifeand I want to live so much and enjoy my youth, which the disease has already taken away from me for 5 years. I also underwent expensive and non-reimbursed genetic tests, the results of which are to provide information about significant gene changes and possible additional targeted therapies. Since then, I have been staying at home, enjoying the results of the treatment, catching up on school work, and meeting friends, while praying that this nightmare will never come back. I devote a lot of attention to rehabilitation and regeneration of the ravaged body after devastating chemotherapy cycles. I am constantly under the care of an oncologist, cardiologist, neurologist, nephrologist, urologist and endocrinologist.

Despite frequent medical check-ups that remind me of my illness - I am very happy that I got a chance at life. I hope that in the future I will be able to help others!

I want to live so much and enjoy my youth, from which the disease has already robbed me of 5 years - Agata Maciejewska

Aktualizacja z dnia 22.06.2021

Wyniki badań są dobre, Agata dalej przyjmuje leki, ale na co dzień czuje się dobrze i może normalnie funkcjonować.
